Pep Guardiola Feels ‘Lucky’ at Manchester City After Chelsea Sack Enzo Maresca

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted he feels “lucky” to be working at the Etihad Stadium after Chelsea decided to part ways with Enzo Maresca, a coach he described as “incredible.”

Maresca, who previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant during City’s 2022–23 treble-winning season, left Chelsea on New Year’s Day following a disappointing run of results. The decision once again highlighted the sharp contrast between Chelsea’s managerial instability and Manchester City’s long-term project under Guardiola.

“From my point of view, Chelsea lose an incredible, incredible manager,” Guardiola said ahead of City’s Premier League clash against the London club.
“Incredible person. But it’s a decision from Chelsea’s hierarchy. Nothing to say.”

‘Nothing Surprises Me in Football,’ Says Guardiola

Asked whether Maresca’s departure shocked him, Guardiola was pragmatic, pointing to the unpredictable nature of modern football.

“In football? Nothing surprises,” he said.
“It only confirms how lucky I am. I was and I am at an extraordinary club.”

Guardiola emphasized the trust and patience shown by Manchester City’s board, even during challenging periods when results did not go their way.

Guardiola Addresses His Future at Manchester City

Reports linking Enzo Maresca with a potential future role at City reignited speculation about Guardiola’s long-term plans. The Spanish coach, however, quickly dismissed any immediate concerns.

“You want to fire me?” Guardiola joked.
“My salary is so high. I have one more year.”

He later added firmly:

“I have a contract. I’m happy. I want to fight with my team.
The club supported me even when we didn’t win for three months. That proves everything.”

Guardiola, who has spent nearly a decade at City, reassured fans that while he will eventually leave, his commitment remains absolute.

Manchester City Take Cautious Approach With Rodri

Despite dropping points in a 0–0 draw against Sunderland, leaving City four points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race, Guardiola found encouragement in the return of Rodri.

The Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder made a second-half appearance after recovering from knee and hamstring issues.

“With Rodri on the pitch, we are always better,” Guardiola said.
“But we have to be careful.”

With fixtures piling up, City’s medical staff will closely monitor Rodri and Jeremy Doku, both returning from long-term injuries.
