Lahore (NNI): In a significant move towards environmental sustainability and modern transportation, the Punjab government has decided to gradually convert its official vehicle fleet to electric vehicles (EVs). This decision reflects the provincial government’s strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions, lowering fuel costs, and promoting clean and green energy solutions across Punjab. As part of this initiative, the government has announced that it will now exclusively purchase electric vehicles for official use and will no longer buy new petrol or diesel-powered vehicles.
Additional Chief Secretary Ahmed Raza Sarwar recently inspected a range of electric vehicles at the Civil Secretariat in Lahore. During the inspection, he reviewed the performance, design, and technical features of the vehicles to assess their suitability for government operations. Officials accompanying him briefed him on the operational benefits of electric vehicles, including reduced maintenance costs, energy efficiency, and their positive impact on air quality.
The decision to transition to electric vehicles is expected to play a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges such as smog and air pollution, which have become serious concerns in major cities of Punjab, especially Lahore. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the Punjab government aims to set an example for both the public and private sectors to adopt eco-friendly transportation alternatives.
Several local and international companies have also presented their electric vehicle models to the Punjab government. These companies showcased a variety of options, including electric cars, bikes, and utility vehicles, offering different features and price ranges to meet the government’s diverse needs. The government will evaluate these proposals carefully to select vehicles that are cost-effective, reliable, and suitable for long-term use.
Officials stated that this initiative is part of a broader policy framework aimed at promoting renewable energy and sustainable development in the province. The shift to electric vehicles is expected not only to reduce fuel imports and operational expenses but also to encourage investment in EV infrastructure, such as charging stations, across Punjab.
